Downers Grove
The Village of Downers Grove is the largest on-train municipality east of Naperville with around 48,000 residents.
What separates Downers Grove from its immediate neighbors is its expansive downtown area. Downers Grove is home to many unique boutique shops, dining establishments, pubs, and community events. Downtown Downers Grove is a popular shopping and dining destination due to its central location and variety. Another highlight of the downtown is its large public library located just steps off Main Street. The Tivoli Theatre and over 140 community events and festivals, which attract thousands of visitors each year, has helped to earn Downtown Downers Grove a spot on Chicago Tribune’s “Top 10 List of Downtowns.”
While Downers Grove has seen its fair share of redevelopment to make way for newer homes, lots of mature homes have retained their value and offer charm and variety to the neighborhood. In fact, Downers Grove prides itself on its large collection of Sears-Roebuck Catalog homes built from kits purchased between 1908 and 1940.
The village has three BNSF Metra stations (Belmont, Main St., and Fairview) each of which offers express service to the Loop and provides convenient commuting to all its residents. The Belmont Road stop handles commuters from neighboring areas and the Fairview stop is very close to Westmont. The most used station within the village is the Main Street station located in the heart of the village’s central business district.
Quickly accessible from I-355, I-88, and I-55, Downers Grove offers fast and convenient pathways to the Chicago Loop, the better part of suburban Chicago, and both Midway (30 min) and O’Hare (30 min) airports.
Over 95% of homes in Downers Grove lie within the boundaries of Elementary School District 58. Additionally, Downers Grove homes all feed into Downers Grove High School District 99, made up of two high schools serving the residents on either the north or south ends of town. These school districts are widely recognized as top districts. Downers Grove is also home to Avery Coonley, a private school for gifted children.
